Boxing Bear: Handmade

In an effort to increase the "handmadiness" of my prints, I'm adding an official seal of approval to each print in the form of a stamp to the back of each print sold.

It beats the hell out of an "Inspected by: 11435" secretly tucked in your pocket when you aren't looking.

How do you know it's official? Check for the stamp.

You can find approved art prints in my Etsy shop, or by simply clicking Boxing Bear.

To All the Crows... v2.0

Woody Guthrie's "To All the Crows"
Jeff Mitchell, 2012

This piece will be for sale in my Etsy shop soon, but you can also get a print in the Gift Shop at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa for the duration of the Woody Guthrie Centennial event.

A framed version of this print will be on display (and for sale) at Joe Momma's in downtown Tulsa during the month of March. It will hang alongside more than a dozen of my art prints. I encourage you to attend the opening on Wednesday, March 7th from 6-8 pm.

The whispering crow represents the undermining influence of Jim Crow laws on social equality during the Great Depression era. Guthrie documented his fight against Jim Crow laws through song and prose.

Woody Guthrie is a key component of a rich cultural heritage shared by inhabitants of the state of Oklahoma.

To All the Crows...

We're slowly creeping up on the 100-year anniversary of Oklahoma legend Woody Guthrie's birth. This summer, there will be festivals, art exhibits and numerous mentions of the commemoration, one of which will be art show at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, OK. Slated to coincide with the Grammy celebration of Guthrie, the event will run from Feb. 5th through April 29th, and I encourage anyone in the area to attend.

For my part, I've (almost) created a painting for the museum. There is still some minor work to be done, but prints of "To All the Crows" can be found alongside works from Sara Bowersock in the Gilcrease Museum Gift Shop.

If you simply refuse to leave your house, I'm sure you'll be able to grab one of these fine prints from my Etsy shop.

Where the Buffalo Roam

I'm pleased to finally have finished this piece of art. It's somewhat different from the art that I've produced over the past year, in that there is much more detail and the color is minimal. However, it's turned out to be one of my favorite pieces in my collection.

--

It was laborious and will forever remind me of the birth of my second daughter, since it's the painting I was working on in the final day's of my Sarah's pregnancy and was completed days after Hollan was born.

Sarah seems to like it, too. She's agreed that this should hang in our home.

--

This painting reminds me of the solitude I experienced growing up in the southern plains. I'm not describing a social solitude, but rather the emptiness of the land, and the small scale of being human against the grand landscape of the rural Great Plains.

As always, you can see this print and others from my collection at the Boxing Bear Etsy Shop.

La Cholita has landed

My commissioned piece from December went very well and was delivered to a happy household between the holidays.

Dia de los Muertos Pin-up turned pretty gritty half way through, but I thought it would make a nice contrast to the traditional beauty that accompanies imagery of pin ups.

If you're interested in getting your own Day of the Dead Pin-Up print, visit Boxing Bear's Etsy Shop.
